5468. Cart De Visite: Joseph Arch: Farm Workers Union

Born at Barford, Warwickshire, England in 1826. the son of a farm labourer, Joseph Arch a lay preacher and champion hedge layer was later was asked by the exploited farm workers to organise a union. On 29th May, 1872, the National Agricultural Labourers' Union was established and Joseph Arch was elected as its full-time President. By 1874 he had over 86,000 members, over one-tenth of the farm work force in Britain. This card shows a young man and is in excellent condition, the apparent marking on the photo are in the negative. Titled in negative: 'Magdalen College Oxford , From High Street G.W.W.' Slight edge fading mostly on top edge. No wrinkling. 20 x 13 Titled in negative: 'Christ Church, Oxford From the Meadows 4658 G.W.W.' Slight fading especially on the edges. One wrinkle. 20 x 15 cm. Untitled or signed showing Queen's College. Good tones. Fading to right edge. Photographer unknown, possibly Wilson.
